Flying Start Marketing

(Introduction)

Flying Start Marketing was a Seattle-based marketing agency I ran, working with businesses across the region.

The work changed constantly. Different industries, different customers, different problems, different goals. Some clients needed stronger branding. Others needed campaigns, digital marketing, better positioning, or simply a clearer way to communicate why someone should choose them.

Running the agency meant learning businesses quickly, understanding what actually mattered, and then building the marketing around that.

There was no single playbook. The work started with understanding the business.

(Challenges)

The hardest part of agency work was not learning more tactics. It was knowing which ones actually mattered.

A strategy that worked for one business could be completely wrong for the next. Different customers bought for different reasons. Different owners had different goals, budgets, constraints, and levels of marketing maturity.

That meant the work could not start with a channel or a campaign idea. It had to start with the business itself.

What are they actually selling? Why do customers choose them? Where is growth getting stuck? What is worth fixing first?

The challenge was knowing what mattered most for each business, then building around that.

(Final thoughts)

Flying Start gave me a broad view of marketing early in my career.

Working across different businesses meant constantly changing perspective, learning new industries, understanding new customers, and finding the clearest path from a business problem to a marketing decision.

It taught me that good marketing rarely starts with the channel.

It starts with understanding why the business works, why the customer cares, and where the two can connect more clearly.

That experience became the foundation for how I approach marketing today.
